Grenzerfahrung 2021

Well #davidisontheroadagain. We, that is Clive,Hans and David were suposed to be traveling around the baltic see with the bikes. We all know that Corona does not stop at borders and even has the power to close them as did hapen to the Baltic countries and Russia. We then looked for a route that does not cross any borders and we came up with the idee to travel along the east german border from south to north then traveling along the Baltic see to Danemark, crossing over to the north see und then along the german west border. Well that is what we will be doing starting on the 23.06.2021. From the original  crew we have invited  Hans-Werner along for the ride and Rene will be joining us for a few days. So watch this space for some news and pictures.

Day 1

Berlin-Weiden

After packing the bike it was once again davidontheroadagain but this time around the start was  a bit different. The first stop this morning and every morning for the next two weeks will be the Test center and not the petrol station. As my second vaccination is not two weeks old I have to have a negative covid test, that is not older than 24 hrs before I can check into the Hotel.

Clive and i meet at the Spinner Brücke (Bike meeting Place in Berlin) and we started the 420 Km ride to Weiden where will meet up with Hans nnd Werner .

The journey down to Weiden was a bit cold but it stayed more or less dry.

After Hans and Werner arrived in Weiden we went for a meal with Thomas who is the owner of the Hotel where we are staying.

Day 2

Weiden-Passau

After a very good night’s sleep day two started with the discussion do we put on the wet weather gear or not. the decision was we do not and it turned out to be the right decision.

It Started off a bit cloudy and cold but during the day the temperatures went into the high twenties

The Hotel and the food are very good and as you can see the water in the river Ilz is very high. there was very little traffic on the road so we were in the hotel around 16:30

Day 3

Passau-Nittenau

After a good Breakfast and a good nichts sleep we put on the wet weather gear and set of along the Blue Danube towards the german Austrian border

We got caught in the one shower or an other but nothing major . Als always we kept to very smal country roads with a little bit off gravel  to keep us awake. After a good 260Km we arrived at our Hotel Brauereihotel Jakob in Nittenau. After a shower and a shave we had a good meal and got off to bed early

Day 4

Nittenau-Brettmühle

Today we have 333Km to cover before we arrive in Saxoney at our Hotel Brettmühle. It is a bit cold but it looks as if we will have no raintoday

After one or two stops along the way we arrived in Brettmühle in the late afternoon. The Hotel is just what you need to relax after a lon biker's day. after a good meal and a few beers it was of to bett.

Day 5

Brettmühle-Görlitz

As we got up the sun was already shinning and our jungster had already done his 11 km run. After a very good Breakfast we set off on our 290 km trip to Görlitz.

After a very nice ride along Country roads, we arrived in Gorlitz around 17:00hrs in the evening. It had been a long warm day with Temperatures around 32 degrees.  Clive has just found the hotel room key in his pocket, well off to the post office tomorrow morning

After a wash and a clean-up we took a walk to a Greek Restaurant in the  old city centre from Görlitz. It was a nice warm sommer evening so we sat outside and had a very nice meal and of course the oblatory Greek schnapps. As we walked back to the Hotel it was starting to get dark.

Day 6

Görlitz-Schwedt

This day started off with Clive going to the post office and Rene buying a new tooth brush. The night for Hans was not a good one as the power switch in his room was not working properly and the room ventilator kept switching it`s self off.

We had a good breakfast and set off on our 318 km trip.

This is unfortunately the only picture of the day. we started off with 318km on the clock and at the end of the day we had travelled nearly 400 km due to diversions and road works and that with temperatures in the low 30 . We had roads that were marked as normal tarmac roads but were in reality just a dirt track through the woods. as we got to Schwedt we were all ready for a shower, and a beer.

Day 7

Schwedt-Stralsund

Well we have all had a well earned sleep and after a good Breakfast. We then set of on our 300km trip to Stralsund in the hope that it would not be so warm as the day before and we would have no diversions on the way. We have to be in Stralsund in time for the German English football match.

Above are a few pictures from the Turm Hotel in Stralsund

We were lucky and it was not to warm and we had more or less no diversions so we had time for some Pictures

We also had time for a break at the Harbour from Altwarp

We arrived in Stralsund just a little bit late and missed the first 10 min of the game. Well as you all now know the germans lost the game. After the game it was off to bed as it had been a long day

Day 8

Stralsund-Timmdorf

Hans and Werner had more or less gotten over the results of the german English game, so after a good breakfast we set of on our 284km tour to the town of Timmdorf. Today would be the first ferry crossing from many

The tour went along the banks of the Baltic see and we took time to have a look at the see and have a cup off coffee

As you kann see it was a bad weather day and we we got a bit wet on the way, but managed ti miss out te major storms in the area. So after a good meal it was off to bed .

Day 9

Timmdorf-Bredstedt

After a good nights sleep and after we dryed our bikes ( it had rained all night ) we all went to the main house for breakfast but unfortunately the early shift had slept in and there was nobody there to make our breakfast. after about 30 min the owner had gotting everything under control and after a good ( late ) breakfest we set of in wet gear on our 320km tour.

The sun came out and we were able to take off the wet weather gear. As we arrived at our Hotel in Bredstedt we discovered that the hotel Restaurant was closed, so we had to find some where else to eat which was not that easy, bur we found a nice Italien Restaurant and went happy and satisfied to bed.

Day 10

Bredstedt-Jever

The plan was that Hans was driving home and Werner Clive and myself would be driving to Jever. At breakfast Werner let us know that he would be traveling with Hans and would not be comimg with Clive and myself. S so we traveled part of the way together before parting and going our seperat ways. Today is my last test day.

Today was bridge and ferry day. i think we used 3 ferries and 3 bridges.

At one bridge Clive and i had been waiting for about 15 min and were wondering although the brige was closed for road traffic, ther were no ships passing through. We then saw the sign that shows the opening and closing times of the bridge for road traffic , and we discovered that on Fridays the bridge is closed all day to road traffic, and today is Friday. So we just had to turn around and find another route.

Clive and myself have arrived dry, but tired and hungry in Jever. Hans and Werner also arrived safely in Herne. After a shave and a shower it was off to the town for a meal and a few beers.

Day 11

Jever-Holzminden

It was only a sort trip from 270km today. The weather was good but got a bit warm towards the end of the day. we took our time and stopped at more than one bakery on the way

After our welcome beer and a good meal it was of to bed early. We had decided due to the weather,a storm front was approaching from the west to get up early and be on the road by 08:00

Day 12

Holzminden-Berlin

we were up early and had a good breakfast before we set of for home. We have about 370km  to cover today. As we set of it started to rain but it was not heavy enough to put on the bad weather gear.

Well our plan worked and we were in Berlin by 13:30 after doing around 300km on the country roads before we took the motorway for the last few km. We had more or less no traffic on the small country roads so that we made good progress.  Asd we got to berlin we had once agin more than 30 degrees

The End

Well that was that. we covered around 3800km, used about 190 Ltrs of Petrol and visited 11 cities and slept in same amount of differant Hotels.

We had a grat time with no misshaps and the weather was very good to us.  That was the East and North border of Germany I am looking forward to the West and South borders. Clive,Hans,Werner and Rene it was great being on the road with you guys again.
