We, Clive, Hans and I were supposed to be flying to Malaga on the 4th of September  to spend 3 weeks travelling through Spain, Portugal and France on our bikes, but due to Corona we have had to change our plans, so we decided to take the 3 weeks and use them to travel through the alps from west to east and back again

We will be visiting 9 cities and travelling 7500km .

We will start in Pegnitz in Bavaria where Clive and I meet up with Hans.

Day one

Berlin-Pegnitz

Well the day started early this morning as the alarm went off at 06:30, Karin made Breakfast as I had a shower and a shave. As from my weather App predicted it was raining but it was to stop before I left to meet Clive and it did but the prediction was that it would rain later on this morning so on with the wet weather gear.

We were to have luck it stayed a bit cloudy for about half off the 448km and then the sun came out and we could take off our wet weather gear. The first 130 km  were on the motorway and then on to the small country roads that I so love. Clive and I have done many trips together but we decided that we have never taken this tour before. We arrived in Pegnitz about 16:30 and Hans was there about 30 min later. The weather was so warm that we could sit down outside and have a meal and a few beers.I would just to thank Andrea for the Corona mouth and nose masks she made for us. Unfortunately you cannot see it on the picture but we have our names on the bottom right hand corner.I know I am behind but it is late and I am going to bed. More tomorrow

Day Two

Pegnitz - Imst

As I woke up this morning the sun was shining, and according to the Weather forecast it could stay dry until we reached Imst in the late afternoon, and you will not believe it we did not get caught in the rain

After a good breakfast we packed the bikes and started traveling south. the first 30km were on good wide roads so that we could get used to the extra weight, after that we went onto very small winding roads. after a good 440Km we arrived in Imst a bit tired but happy

After a shower and a shave, we sat down to our evening meal and a few beers. the place we are staying at is called Trofana Tyrol and is a Motorway stop over, but to our surprise very comfortable. after a briefing for the next day it was off to bed. the first day in the Alps is waiting.

Day Three

Imst

well we all had a good night’s sleep but the Weather is not that good so we decided to shorten the Tour from 350km to 250Km. so after a good breakfast we set off on our trip. this was stopped after about 10km due to road works on one of the main roads. the diversion was not well signed and it took us nearly 30 min to find a new rout

On the first picture you can see the view from my window early in the morning, and as you can see on the second picture, we had some blue sky and sun. The tour went through Nauders down the west side of Lake Reschen, this is a great single-track road with very little traffic. We then went through the Munster valley before returning to Nauders from the west. We then went up to the Piller heights but due to the mist we could not see anything, that’s when the weather turned bad and we hat drive back to the hotel in the rain. Sfter drying out we had a meal and  a few beers

,

Day Four

Imst

Today we have a 260km trip on our agenda. The weather is cloudy and cold but according to our weather App it will stay dry, and believe it or not we did not get wet

We started a bit later this morning deu to the Weather. In Landeck we left the main road and took small single tracks into the Mountain

We took the the B188 for a few kilometes before leaving the main road and going back into the mountains.

We then took the road through Ischgl and Galtur before reaching the Silvretta see where we had a hot soup as the temperature have dropped to 6 degrees. we then travelled through Bludenz, Faschina and Fontenella before making our way back to the Hotel.

Back at the Hotel it is time to pack our bags as we are off to the Dolimites tomorrow morning.

Day Fife

Imst-Altrei

After a good breakfast with eggs and bacon we set off to cover the 250km to Altrei in the Dolomites. the sun was shining and the roads are dry. Before we reach our Hotel, we have 3 mountain passes to cross. the first one was the Timmelsjoch which is 2474 m above sea level. the next one on the list is the Jaufenpass with 2094 m above sea level. And last but not least is the Penser Joch with 2274m above sea level

we arrived at our Hotel Langeshof in Altrei tired but with a big smile on our faces.

Day Six

Dolomites

This is our home for the next three nights and our bikes have a place to stay as well. The Hotel is called Langeshof

This is our tour for the day. we have around 270km to cover

It was a great day unfortunately the weather turned on us and the last hour we had a bit off rain and wet roads.

Day Seven

Dolomites

This is the tour for today around 360 Km, mostly on small mountain roads, been looking forward to this tour for weeks.

The Passo Mendola was one of many Passes in the Delimits but it is, in my opinion the best one to ride. There is nearly on every pass a cafe where you can have a cup of coffee, a piece of cake and a laugh before getting of the next pass or cafe. today the weather was perfect for biking. not to hot in the valley and not to cold on the mountains. We got back to the hotel late in the afternoon had a shower a meal and strted to pack as tomorrow we are going off to Heiligenblut in Austria

Day Eight

Dolomite - Großglockner

We are now traveling 340km from Italy to Austria to a village called Heiligenblut which is the closest village to the highest mountain in Austria the Großglockner. the place is a must for bikers due to the high alpine mountain road. we stopped just before Cortina de Ampezzo for a meal which was very nice but also very expensive. For the first and only time we are staying in a B&B and not in a Hotel. The B&B and is called Villa Brandstatter. once agin we are travelling on mostly small country roads

Due to a bad weather front we shortened the trip thus avoiding the rain storm and got to our accommodation without getting wet. The sign on the accommodation door said "I am not at home but give me a call on this nr". The owner answered and welcomed us and told me the keys are in the flower pot on the left-hand side. I have checked into many Hotels but this was one off the most unusual ways to do so.

We Parked the bikes, quickly unpacked and went for a meal. After the meal we sat down in the village centre and listened to the local choir, and the took a walk through the village and off to bed

Day Nine

Heiligenblut

This was the view from ma window this morning. No Comment

This was to be our 350km tour for today, but after 2750km in 8 days it was time for a rest so we decided only to do the Großglockner alpin montain road which added up to about 100km and we were back at ou B&B at 13:00 hrs

After a queit afternoon we had an early meal and went to bed earlier than usual

Day Ten

Heiligenblut

This is our 360 km tour for today we will be going along the Malta Valley and going over the Nockenalm. the weather is great so after a good breakfast we set off into the sun. believe or not the view from my room window was the same as the day before. terrible !!!!!!!

After a long but great day we got back to our B&B had a shower and started packing for tomorrow we are traveling to Villach. The restaurant where we had a meal the last two evening is closed tonight so we decided to give ourselves a treat and went to the Glockner hof and had a meat fondue. It was delicious

Day Eleven

Heiligenblut - Villach

Today we have a 280Km trip to Villach, and yes the view from my window this morning was the same as the two days before.

As you can see we did not straight to  to Villach from Heiligenblut but took  the long way round through  Italy

We arrived at the Seestuben, our Hotel for the  next three nights save and sound and with enough time to site on the veranda and drink a nice cool beer with a beautiful view auf the lake

After a shower a shave and a very good meal it was off to bed, tomorrow we have a day trip to Slovenia. Good night

Day Twelve

Slovenia

Welltoday we have a 290km round trip and will spend most of the tin in the Alps from Slovenia. but early this morning the swans on the lake where mor important.

It was a long hot day with temperatures going up to 30 dergrees and that in the mountains. Slovenia is a very nice country and is very similar to Austria.as i said it was along day and we did not get back to the hotel until 18:00

Just a few pictures few pictures from the town called Bled

We thought we may have problems at the borders crossing from one country to an other but this was not the case. once again back at the hotel we had a nice meal and went to bed with a smile on our face.

Day Thirteen

Villach

Once again the sun is high in the sky as we set off for our 333Km trip which would take us back into Slovenia.

We set off at 09:00 in the morning and our first stop was a wish from Hans. He wanted to visit the Town Shiefling where he had been on vacation many times. Hans was there for the first time for nearly 40 years. Many things have changed but he still recognised the place where he stayed on many occasions. After the stop we made it of into the Mountain once again using small and very small country roads.

On this trip our Off road training in Spain was off great use to us. One of the small mountain roads was block due to road works and we had to take the official diversion, this turned out to be a dirt track which took us up the mountain side and back onto the tarmac road. It was very hard work but a lot of fun.

Back at the hotel it was time to start packing as we are off to Vorau tomorrow morning for the next stop on our alpin trip.

Day Fourteen

Villach - Vorau

After a thunder storm that went on through the night it had stopped raining in the morning and after a good breakfast, we put on our wet weather gear and set off to Vorau. This 300km trip started off with a small mishap. when taking my luggage to the bike i put a water bottle in my helmet and it was not closed properly so as i hung my helmet over my mirror the water poured out of my helmet. not a very nice feeling driving with a wet helmet.

The weather was better than the forecast and we arrived at the Kutscherwirt, our Hotel in Vorau without getting wet. We took our time and  had three or four breaks along the way for coffee and cake or a banana split. After a good meal it is off to bed it had been a long day and the over 3500 km are starting to take there toll

Day Fifteen

Vorau

As i woke up this morning the sun was just starting to appear on the horizon and the Weather forecast for today was dry but a bit chilly. it is a good start to our 280km trip.

As always after a good breakfast we started our day trip. the weather is good but very cold we have on temperatures on the mountain from around 8 degrees. We had time enough to stop for a coffee or two and a hot soup in the afternoon. A stop at the supermarket was on our agenda because after two weeks and nearly 4000km we are running out of the one thing or another

We now have been on the road for two weeks and have stayed in 6 hotels and covered nearly 4000km. We still have a good laugh every evening and during the day. By the way talking about laughing,  do you now what the A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle is??????  while you are thinking about that one i wish you a good night i am going to my bed.

Day Sixteen

Vorau

Well the view from The Kutscherwirt in Vorau is the same this morning as it was yesterday. The weather is great just a little chilly but perfect for riding the bike. we just a short trip today from around 230 km

It was very cold this morning as we started our trip which took us north of Vorau. We had two stops for coffee and cake. At the first stop I had a nice piece of Linzer cake for the others it was too early. At the second stop the cake was sold out so Hans hat an ice cream instead and Clive just a coffee. Back at the Hotel Hans decided to go into the Sauna.

After our meal this evening it back to the room and getting our bags packed as we are of to Steyr tomorrow

Day Seventeen

Vorau - Steyr

I am sorry that i have to keep repeating myself but the view from the balcony has stayed the same for the last three days. Well our last week of the three week tour has now just started and today we are setting of on the 286km trip to Steyr.

After a good breakfast we started the tour with about 9 degrees, yes that is cold on a bike, so on with the bad/ cold weather gear and off we go.

Our first stop was after 80km at the Niederalpl but before we got there  we had one or two nice moments, our reward was just delicious. so after a cup of coffee and a piece of cake we were on the road again

After a very interesting, from a bikers view, mountain road we stopped for te second coffee, cake or ice cream

This is only a picture from Clive’s Ice but Hans ordered a similar ice I on the other hand only had a piece of cake and a coffee.

We got to the Minichmayr Hotel in Steyr a bit early and had to wait to check in. After unpacking the bikes we had a shave and a shower and then took a walk into the city centre for a meal.

After a meal and a beer it was back to the Hotel for a good nights sleep

Steyr by night.

Day Eighteen

Steyr

The first picture is from yesterday evening as we arrived in Steyr and the second picture was taken this morning. There is a bit of a difference. Never the less it's off to breakfast as we have a 330km tour today

We started as always with very small roads and this area there a a lot of them. they are usualy used by the farmers, therefore there is very little traffic.

The fog was slowly starting to lift and it was getting warmer. As we started this morning it was just about 12 degrees and as soon as the fog disappeared, we had 18 or 19 degrees. It was turning into a great day

At the first break we just had Coffee and no cake, but then at the second break we just could not resist the great home baked cake.

It was now time to get back to the Hotel have a shave and a shower before sitting down to our well earned meal. Did you know that a water fall in front of your bedroom window can be very very loud. I think I will sleep with a closed window tonight. Good night.

Day Nineteen

Steyr

Well sleeping with a closed window worked wonders, i had a very good night’s sleep. the view from my bedroom window is the same as yesterday. well of too breakfast and I hope it clears up like it did yesterday. Today we have a 320km tour

Well the fog cleared up but before it did we got some graet pictures.

The first part of the tour took us up into the mountaind and then along the banks of the river Enns

Our first break after about 80km was only supposed to be Coffee and cake but Hans decided to have a second Breakfast, Clive and myself just had to make do with a piece of cake.

After the first break the weather turned once again just perfekt and we just enjoyed the rest of the day on fantastic roads. The weather forcast for the next days is not that good .

Well we are back at the Hotel and the friend from Hans, Werner, has joined us and will be touring with us for the last few days. well after a good meal its back to my room writing this blog and starting to pack for, we are off to Faistenau tomorrow for the last stop before traveling back to berlin with an overnight stop in Weiden

Day Twenty

Steyr - Faistenau

As i woke up this morning the sun was shining and I thought after looking at my weather App we may not get wet today., but even if it rains it is only 145km to Faistenau

So, the bikes are packed we have paid for the Hotel and we have had a good breakfast. As i mentioned before Werner has joined us and it looks like he has brought the bad weather with him. after about 20km it started to rain and did not stop until we reached the Hotel Fischerwirt in Faistenau.  Lucky for us it was only a small trip. we made one stop at MacDonald’s. I think they will remember today for a long time when 4 dripping bikers waddled into their restaurant and sat down for coffee and cake. The poor girl had to dry the floor at least 4 times and one off their customers nearly slipped and fell down. This time Hans and Werner just had a coffee but Clive and myself did have a piece off cake. after drying out a little we set off for Faistenau. There are unfortunately no pictures due to the torrential rain, but according to the locals tomorrow is going to be a nice sunny day. We had a quiet afternoon a good evening meal and it is off early to bed.

Day Twentyone

Faistenau

As I woke up this morning the rain clouds had disappeared and the sun had come out to play, it was still a bit cold but just perfect for the 280km tour.

We started after a good breakfast along the Ambach Clam on a small country single track.  The first break was at the Post Alm

After the break the next stop was at the Halbstätter see and then onto the   Loser Mountain road.

We then made our way via Bad Ischl ( Coffee and Cake ) back to the Hotel.

Back at the Hotel after dinner we had a look at the weather forecast and decided not to go to the Museums on the bikes. We asked the Hotel owner (Rudi) if we could get a taxi or a hired car, he said not necessary you can have the Hotel minivan. We thought that this is a great service and a super idea.

Day Twentytwo

Faistenau

Well after a very good and long breakfast we set off with the hotel minivan to the two museums we wanted to look at. our decision to take the van and not the bikes was the right one it was 8 degrees and it rained the whole day. the first museum was Fahr traum in Mattsee which is a great Porsche Museum and then onto the Hanger 7 from red bull in Salzburg. if you are ever in the area these two museums are an absolut must.

After returning to the Hotel we had our usual coffee and cake

As we were just finishing our dinner Rita came into the restaurant and said that it had started to snow. That was not good news as this was our last night and we are driving home with an overnight stay in Weiden. we all went out and had a look and yes, we had 3 degrees and the bikes and cars were covered in snow. we went off to bed with a funny feeling in our stomach

Last but not least Should you want to know what a ninja Turtle is doing on my blog Just asked Hans.

Day Twentythree/Twentyfour

Going Home

Well it was supposed to be a two-day tour from Austria through Bavaria to Berlin traveling on small country roads. Due to the weather 5 degrees and torrential rain we decided to take the direct way and travelled 280km in 5 hrs using major roads and avoiding town centres. For tomorrow the weather forecast is about just as bad and we will probably get onto the motorway and take the shortest and quickest way to berlin.

Tonight, we went for a great meal in a Bavarian restaurant in Weiden. I had asked Thomas to to join us for a meal and a few beers. It was a very interesting evening hearing from Thomas (the owner of the Hotel) how he had copped with Corona over the last months. We also talked a lot about the trip and the different things that we had done and seen. Well lets see what tomorrow brings. Wish you all a good night.

Woke up this morning and as we had expected the weather was not good at all 7 degrees and raining. Hans and Werner will be travelling west to Herne and Clive and myself will be travelling north to Berlin. Clive and i decided to get onto the motorway and just get home. We did and covered the 420km in just under 4 hours only stopping for a coffee and a sausage for us and some petrol for the bikes, and guess what we got home dry and even the sun came out for a while. Hans and Werner did a mix of motorway and main country roads but got caught in a shower. At the end of the day we all got home safely.

So that was The Alpen Tour 2020 with Hans, Clive, David, and Werner as special guest. We spent at least one night in 9 different Hotels, visited 5 countries, covered 6700km and where on the road for 24 days . We had a lot of fun, and laughed a lot. We had interesting talks about god and the world. We had no accidents no near misses and we and our bikes are all in one piece. So to put it  in a nutshell it was a grat 3 weeks.

Would love to do something similiar in the future.

Ba and Stay Safe.

David, Hans,Clive and Werner
